Example 1

DE

Listen for: This is the start of the story of Jan, bird counter and volunteer, and his experience with the wading birds of Ameland. Listen to how each bird is heard the moment Jan names it, so word and sound meet. When Jan says “oh, can you hear that?”, he invites you to listen with him and draws you into the story. The tour uses binaural sound, placing the birds around you, with the aim of making the information easier to hold on to than in plain stereo. A specially composed theme connects the stories and gives them a sense of adventure. Field recordings made on the island itself keep the sound authentic and true to place.

Example 2 - Zaalgeluid loop

EN

Listen for: This is the sound that plays on a loop in the exhibition room itself. Before mixing, the room’s acoustics were measured, so the result sounds natural in the space. You hear the five biotopes shown in the exhibition, each in turn, built from field recordings made on the island. There is deliberately no music: only the island itself, so visitors feel as if they are standing outdoors. The setup and hardware were chosen so the museum can work flexibly with the sounds, and can expand the system later. Online you hear a headphone version of the room installation.

Context

Stichting Amelander Musea · Van Pool tot Paradijs · 2026 Amelander Musea opened a new permanent exhibition about wading birds. It runs around the spiral staircase on the ground floor and across the full first floor, past the lift, the glass wall and the restaurant, toward the climate room.

The question

How can every visitor, including people who are blind or partially sighted, hard of hearing, on the autism spectrum or using a wheelchair, find their way and feel the Wadden Sea and its birds? The museum also wanted one consistent formula for all its rooms.

Our approach

Six stops of about three minutes each, in Dutch, German and English, with transcripts in each language. Field recordings from Ameland shaped calm soundscapes, with original theme music guiding mood. Visitors start each stop with one tap on a tactile NFC marker, with QR as fallback. Scripts described space and direction and were checked for clarity and sensory load.

Outcome

Designed so visitors can start each stop without a camera or app, and follow the story by listening or reading. Soundscapes were made to stay gentle and free of abrupt changes. The tour was delivered in Dutch, German and English. Hardware was installed and tested, and a soundscape was made for the physical space.
